Food was okay. Not great but not bad either. Decided to try it on a whim since we've lived in the neighborhood for 40+ years. Had steak, good size side salad and potato. Had to take it to go (I would've rather ate in) but we got there and according to posted hours they were supposed to to close in an hour but they said they were closing in 10 mins so we opted for take out. Price was decent but probably wouldn't return.
Came by today stayed and dined got my steak sandwich I love so much TL got the shis kabob with beef thanks
Great value for money. Nicely cooked steaks, big portions and great flavor. If the ambience was a little updated, I'd make this a 4.5.
My favorite hole in the wall. The food is always well cooked and at a reasonable price.
No frills but good tasty steak. Cooked just right. Big salad with chopped beets and cucumber. My steak had a lot of fat but tender. Two meals in one! Loved the big table in the back like you are in your own dining room. Today was raining so there weren't any people. The tip box looked like a locked suggestion box.
My family and I have been coming for years and they never disappoint. They hold a special place in our hearts as this was our Dad's favorite. We went there last night for a pre thanksgiving celebration. It's awesome to see that they renovated the floors and they also have apple pay!
This place is just so great: charmingly retro dining room that is sparkling-clean, super-friendly chefs and cashier, and most importantly just hands-down delicious food! I had the NY steak and ate it all but I'm going back to get a hamburger steak and chicken kabobs.
I suppose I should be surprised that I had never been to this old-school steak spot before since it's been around since 1942. Contrary to rumor, I haven't been around since 1942, but hopefully you already know I'm younger than springtime. Anyway, even though the faded sign and darkened windows didn't necessarily beckon me, I decided to give the place a try. I was walking toward the Excelsior from Daly City when it dawned on me that a steak might make a satisfying lunch. The yellow backlit menu on the wall didn't look like it's changed since the Eisenhower era except, of course, for the prices. Mostly steaks, some kabobs, and the obligatory chicken option. I decided I deserved the $21.99 Club Steak, USDA Choice. Immediately upon my order, the cook pulled out the meat and tenderized it with a spiky mallet, while the manager made my sizable Green Salad generously ladled with a thick ranch dressing (photo; https://bit.ly/3TKIaS5). I should've asked for the dressing on the side as it was a bit much for me. I sat in one of the red naugahyde booths straight out of a Rock Hudson/Doris Day movie. Truth be told, I had to switch booths twice to avoid the overly sunken seats, but I guess that's part of its quaint charm as the regular customers wisely sat at the black formica tables. My Club Steak arrived looking juicy and nicely grilled along with a small baked potato, a serving of sour cream, and two very thin slices of garlic toast (photo: https://bit.ly/3TMqZzM). Quibbles aside, I was ready to devour. So what was my verdict? The medium-rare steak was surprisingly good, quite tender and not nearly as sinewy as I thought it would be. And despite their slight paucity, the butter-saturated potato and garlic toast really suited the meal well. It reminded me of the type of steak dinner my dad used to take us out for when he found a family meal coupon in the paper. FOOD - 4 stars...a fine steak the old-fashioned way AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...yes, worn and a bit tired but quite retro-vintage SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty much routine for them but still cordial TOTAL - 4 stars...an old-school steakhouse if that's your preference RELATED - Exploring the Outer Mission?
